Omdia cuts 2020 semiconductor growth forecast
Adding memory, global revenue will total $439.3 billion in 2020, a growth of 2.5 percent from $428.5 billion in 2019 – a reduction from the previous Omdia forecast of 5.5 percent growth for the year.
Market revenue from wireless equipment is set to decline by 4.7 percent from 2019. Omdia has cut its growth forecast for wireless chips to 2 percent, from 4.8 percent previously.
Motor vehicle production is expected to decline by 12.4 percent for the year, resulting in a 7.5 percent decline in semiconductor revenue in the automotive market in 2020.
The industrial semiconductor market is predicted to grow by 2.5 percent this year. The increase will be fuelled by the medical sector, where demand is expected to expand by 5.9 percent to $6 billion in 2020, from $5.6 billion in 2019.
Ventilator equipment used to treat coronavirus patients is expected to be a major driver for the medical sector. Worldwide ventilator shipments are expected to total 691,840 units for the year, a 60 percent rise from 430,843 units last year. In revenue terms, the ventilator market this year will be worth $4.6 billion, an increase of 71 percent from $2.7 billion in 2019.
Omdia expects that the medical end use market will reach $5.8 billion in overall semiconductor sales this year, around 11 percent of the worldwide industrial semiconductor market – up 8.1 percent from 2019.
The medical semiconductor segment is expected to grow faster than the overall industrial semiconductor market in 2021 and beyond. This growth will be driven by long-term trends such as the aging population, the increasing use of telehealth, the move to portable and wearable devices, and the rise of AI.
