On Semiconductor sensors chosen for Baidu’s autonomous driving platform

On Semiconductor and Baidu will collaborate on a new, flexible solution that will ease the incorporation of image sensors into automotive driverless applications.

ON Semiconductor has become the latest company to join Baidu’s Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform. The two companies will use the agreement to jointly develop plug-and-play imaging solutions for partners of the programme. The Apollo platform is intended to provide an open source, hardware and software system to developers of driverless vehicles, and image sensing is one of the key areas of the technology.

The collaboration will use ON Semiconductor’s 3mm-based advanced CMOS image sensor product as the foundation of a solution that will allow designers to quickly start developing a vision system, but will still provide the flexibility to migrate to other sensors when moving to volume production. The agreement will also allow Apollo members priority access to On Semiconductor’s support network and early access to new technologies.

The sensor used for the joint solution will be the R0230AT 1/2.7-inch CMOS digital image sensor with an active-pixel array of 1928Hx1088V. The sensor can capture images in linear or high dynamic range modes and is capable of offering complex imaging functions, such as in-pixel binning and windowing.
