On the search for the ideal interaction

The project focuses on optimizing the interaction between the driver and the electronic systems controlling the movement of the vehicle. Towards this end, they will devise during the project term of 42 months advanced sensors, cooperative vehicle technologies, such as car-to-x communications, and adaptive strategies in which the level of automation is dynamically adapted to the situation and the driver status. Seven passenger cars and one truck will demonstrate various combinations of automated driving. Besides exploring technology aspects, the project will also investigate legal implications of automated driving for manufacturers and drivers, in particular with respect to product liability and road traffic legislation.

With a budget of 25 million euros, AdaptIVe is a relatively large project. Under Volkswagen’s auspice, companies and research institutes from eight European companies collaborate. Besides the usual suspects from Germany, the Centro Ricerche Fiat, Peugeot Citroen, Renault, the Universities of Leeds (UK) and Lund (Sweden) and Trento (Italy) are participating in this project.
