BelGaN, the GaN spinout from onsemi in Belgium, has filed for bankruptcy.

BelGaN in Oudenaarde was spun out of onsemi in 2022 as a GaN foundry after the parent company could not find a buyer for the CMOS power fab. It launched its first 650V enhanced eGaN technology in June 2023 to be an automotive power chip foundry. It had also planned to make depletion mode GaN devices.

“To fund the significant investments associated with the transition process, additional investments were sought after the initial investment by the shareholders, “ said the company.

The fab, previously automotive qualified, employs 440 staff and the management have said they are willing to work with potential investors to re-start the site.

BelGaN was formed on September 30, 2021 as a joint venture between Rockley Management (HK) Ltd. and Wuxi Group Ltd., both of Hong Kong. Rockley Group is a venture capital and advisory firm based in Oxford, England and Shanghai, China. The deal for the fab and Ip was worth $13.6m. Belgian chip firms Melexis and X-Fab were cited as potential buys of the fab at the time.
