Opel to cease car production in Bochum

According to an Opel announcement, the staff at the Bochum plant has been informed that after the production of the Zafira will phase out, likely in the year 2016, no new models will be assembled in this plant. Over many months, the local management had tried to bring the assembly of a follow-up model to Bochum but eventually these efforts failed to succeed. As a result, some 3000 workers will likely lose their jobs.
After 2016, the Bochum plant will be reduced to a logistics site. Presently, there are considerations to continue the production, but only at a lower scale: There could remain a component production in Bochum, The company has launched a working group called "Bochum Perspektive 2022" to attract orders.
