OPTIGA Trust Charge helps secure wireless charging
The new OPTIGA Trust Charge is an embedded security solution for the Qi 1.3 wireless charging standard. It is intended for chargers for small personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, earbuds, tablets, wearables or health tech devices with a charging power of up to 15 W.
Inaccurate power supplies can harm the lifetime of the battery, and can endanger the user. OPTIGA Trust Charge device authentication helps to prevent fake chargers and protects consumer brands from reputation issues.
The new 1.3 version of the Qi standard mandates strong cryptographic authentication for wireless charging devices. The wireless charger is able to authenticate itself to the charging device and prove that it is Qi 1.3 certified. The device then can be charged with maximum power.
Infineon recommends at least EAL4+ certification for the hardware that stores the keys and certificates. For that the protection profiles PP0035 and PP0084 could be used as part of the evaluation. Infineon’s OPTIGA Trust Charge is a full solution including embedded software, host software, a development board, a reference board and documentation. Infineon can inject the certificates and keys that are mandated by WPC into the security chips at the compny’s secured production facilities.
OPTIGA Trust Charge is available in a 3×3 mm USON10-2 package that is optimized for small devices and fits into any charging platform. It features an extended temperature range of -40° to +105° Celsius.
A special version for automotive applications will be launched early next year.
