Osram Continental JV starts operations
Osram Continental is active in the fast-growing market for LED and laser-based lighting modules, solutions and the associated electronics and plans to achieve double-digit growth rates over the next five years. The first products developed in the joint venture should be ready for series production by 2021.
The company has around 1,500 employees at 16 locations worldwide and is headquartered in Munich. The joint venture aims to achieve annual sales in the mid three-digit million euro range. Continental and Osram each hold a 50 percent stake in the joint venture, which is fully consolidated at Osram. Dirk Linzmeier, previously Senior Vice President of Osram, was appointed CEO of the JV.
The market for automotive lighting in the automotive industry is currently in a phase of transition towards semiconductor-based lighting technologies. Software and electronics are continuously gaining influence. Continental and Osram therefore want to combine their strengths in the respective areas and develop modern headlamp modules and solutions for rear and interior lighting for automobile manufacturers and suppliers.
The joint venture will use the increasing digitalization in vehicle lighting to produce intelligent lighting functions for vehicles completely from a single source. With its approach of combining lighting and intelligent electronics, Osram Continental is also driving the market penetration of LED technology in all vehicle segments.
