After completing the takeover, Encelium will be integrated into Osram’s light management systems activities which in turn are a part of Osram’s General Lighting business unit. Osram already held 15 percent of Encelium’s shares; with the move, the company increases its holdings to 100 percent. According to Osram manager Klaus-Günther Vennemann, the move is "the next logical step" in the company’s strategy to become a leading LED lighting systems supplier. Encelium’s lighting control software for commercial buildings was the asset Osram was most interested in. "Against the background of growing demand for higher efficient lighting solutions in commercial buildings and installations, the acquisition enables us to offer intelligent light management systems globally", Vennemann said.

Referring to a recent McKinsey study, Osram said that the global market volume for light management systems (LMS) accounts for about € 2bn. This market volume will double over the next four years and triple until 2020, the company predicts.

Besides improving the energy efficiency, customers demand focuses on better light quality. The possibility to dim light and to control its color, LED lighting can significantly contribute to this goal, Vennemann added.
