The dynamic range of 123dB is 100 times greater than conventional CMOS image sensors and means that overexposure can be prevented in bright scenes and that a high-speed, high–precision images can be produced in dark situations.
The technology also allows a wide incident angle of 60 degrees and allows dual-pixel technology with two detection cells with different sensitivity; for bright scenes and one for dark scenes.
The organic photoconductive film was developed by FujiFilm Corp. and can be as thin as 0.5-micron, approximately a factor of five thinner than the silicon photodiode used in conventional CMOS image sensor thereby allowing the wider incidence angle.
Panasonic said it will apply this technology to surveillance camera, in-vehicle cameras, broadcasting cameras, industrial inspection cameras, digital still cameras and other imaging devices, and contribute to realize high-speed, high-precision imaging and sensing functions.
