Panasonic teams with Toyota for new automotive batteries
As well as exploring the feasibility of a joint venture, the agreement also includes the development of new technology for automotive batteries. Panasonic for example is working on further enhancements to the safety and capacity of its current automotive prismatic batteries.
The two companies have worked together since 1953, so the deal should not be that much of a surprise. However, Panasonic is also the key battery technology and manufacturing partner for Tesla, building cylindrical battery cells at Tesla’s battery gigafab in Nevada. Prismatic batteries can be stacked more efficiently in vehicles with less cladding, making an electric car lighter and increasing the range, but this reduction in cladding also has an impact on the safety of the batteries.
The rise of electric vehicles has seen the business environment undergoing drastic change, and both companies have realised the importance of collaborating with trusted partners and looking past conventional boundaries, they said in Tokyo yesterday. This may see a similar deal to that with Tesla with Panasonic operating battery manufacturing lines within Toyota factories around the world.
Toyota is working on the development of a full range of environmentally friendly vehicles including HVs, PHVs (plug-in hybrid vehicles), FCVs, and EVs (electric vehicles).
