Payment SoC from ST enables secure contactless transactions with wearables
The complete Payment System-on-Chip (SoC) is based on ST’s STPay Boost IC. This combines a hardware security element to protect transactions with a contactless controller equipped with proprietary Active Boost technology to maintain reliable NFC connections even in devices made of metallic materials. The single-chip solution is easily integrated into wearable formats.
Fidesmo’s MasterCard MDES Tokenization Platform completes the solution by enabling the user to load the personal data required for payment transactions. The convenient OTA technology makes personalization a simple process for the user, without the need for special equipment.
An important feature is the security element of ST with the Java-based secure operating system as a hardware confidence base that eliminates the need for independent development or integration of the paid operating system. Thanks to the existing security certificates for the SoC, only a basic functional certification of the new product is required.
Kronaby, manufacturer of hybrid smartwatches based in Malmö, Sweden, has already integrated the STPay boost chip into its portfolio, offering special features such as no recharging and filtered messages. Thanks to Fidesmo’s SoC with tokenization functionality, Kronaby watches can support a variety of services such as payment, access control, tickets and loyalty bonuses.
The STPay boost chips with Fidesmo OTA personalization are currently being sampled for key customers and are expected to go into production in November 2018. The price is starting from 3.50 US Dollar from 1,000 pieces plus the Fidesmo license.
