Phlux raises £9 million Series A to enable product launches
Infrared sensor and connectivity startup Phlux Technology Ltd. (Sheffield, England) has raised £9 million (about US$11.6 million) in a Series A round of funding.
The round was led by BGF with support from previous backers Octopus Ventures, Northern Gritstone and Foresight.
The money will be used to develop Phlux’s antimonide-based sensor and connectivity systems. The company is aiming to launch two product ranges targeting optical communications and sensing systems.
Phlux has developed a high-sensitivity shortwave infrared (SWIR) photoreceiver, designed using a high-gain InGaAs/AlGaAsSb avalanche photodiode (APD) with an excess noise factor of less than 3.5 at a gain of 100.
The use of antimony helps Phlux sensors operate with extremely low noise and this results in up to five times higher data rates for free-space and optical fibre communication systems, the company claims. Sensitivity improvements of 5dB are claimed over current commercial alternatives.
Sensing applications could include safety features in vehicles, industrial automation, defence and security, and high-precision gas sensing.
Phlux raised £4 million in seed funding in 2022 and since then has won customers in Asia, Europe and North America.
