Phoenix to spend $200 million to enable TSMC’s US wafer fab
City officials in Phoenix, Arizona have voted in favour of a development agreement with foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) that would see it commit the funds. Further support for the $12 billion 5nm fab is expected to come from the Arizona state and the US federal government.
TSMC recently approved funds to begin construction of the fab in 2021 (see TSMC approves $3.5 billion spending for Arizona fab) and is reportedly surveying sites around Phoenix for an location that is still to be decided.
