The transparent solar panel coating technology is used for the ClearView Power Window prototype production line based at the company’s headquarters in Redwood City, California.

“We are thrilled to open our first transparent solar window production line. This is an important milestone as we continue quickly marching towards getting transparent solar windows out into the commercial market and installed into buildings,” said Keith Wilson, CEO of Ubiquitous, a spinout of the Massachusetts INstitute of Technology. Transparent solar windows that will be fabricated from the prototype production line will be used in pilot installation projects that will start within the next coming months and year.

The ClearView Power transparent solar panel coating is applied directly to glass using standard glass coating equipment. It selectively absorbs and converts ultraviolet and infrared to electricity while maintaining visible transparency. The coating also acts as a solar control coating by blocking infrared light that heats up buldings. The transparent solar coating can be applied to vertical surfaces of buildings turning traditional windows into aesthetically pleasing, highly energy efficient, and electricity generating windows that are desired by architects, designers, and occupants.

Companies around the world are looking at ways to add transparent solar panel technology to windows to capture energy from new and existing buildings. Asahi Glass, teh world’s largest glass maker, teamed up with Ubiquitous earlier this year to bring the technology to production.
