Plastic waveguides for AR
According to Dr. Jonathan Waldern, founder and chief technology officer for DigiLens, plastic waveguides beat glass on being lightweight, rugged and cheap compared to diffractive waveguides relying on high-quality glass substrates using a complicated silicon wafer type manufacturing process. Waldern expects his company’s waveguide fabrication processes coupled with the plastic substrates can dramatically lower the cost of the waveguide component, while making them nearly unbreakable. OEM’s are already incorporating DigiLens waveguides and plan to offer a monocular AR eyeglass attached to a smartphone later this year in the $500 price range. Because it uses the same type of material, low cost plastic optics, typically used in eyeglasses today, can now be cost effectively bonded to the plastic waveguide for custom AR eyewear in accordance to a user’s prescription.
DigiLens employs a licensing business model, transferring its technology and manufacturing know-how to interested OEMs.
