Platform makes network traffic tests more economic
The STG-10G platform combines the D-ITG traffic generation engine, drivers based on Intel’s DPDK Fast Packet Technology and a number of further test tools under a common user interface. Supporting eight ports of 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Ethernet and four ports of 10 GbE with IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, the platform allows users to perform load test on network hardware prior to deployment and to simulate wired or wireless traffic behaviour.
Users can chose between two modes of packet transmission: One being the standard mode for realistic traffic simulation allowing adjustable data rates. The second one is a so-called Turbo mode which allows line transmission utilizing Intel DPDK drivers. This combination, explains East Coast Datacom, allows the STG-10G to generate traffic at comparable rates to FPGA-based proprietary systems, but at a significantly lower price.
The design of the platform is based on a scientific Open Source project – Distributed Internet Traffic Generator (D-ITG), and a result of a collaboration of East Coast Datacom with Seven One Solutions and NM2, two companies from Italy active in the field of network testing and monitoring. The D-ITG authors also developed the graphical user interface for the test platform.
Further development of the platform will focus on an HTTP/HTTPS traffic engine, support for higher bandwidths (40 abd 100 Gbps) and line capture with analysis features.
