PMIC combo slashes system costs, development time for R-Car-based ADAS
The new solution consists of the RAA271050, a synchronous 42V step-down pre-regulator. It regulates the vehicle’s 12V supply down to an intermediate supply voltage of 3.3V or 5.0V. This is complemented by the RAA271000, a seven-channel PMIC (power management IC) that steps down the output voltage of the RAA271050 to the various supply voltages required by the R-Car V3H and its peripheral devices, such as LPDDR4 memory. Both chips were developed according to the ISO-26262 standard and support system safety requirements up to ASIL-D. The solution meets all power supply and functional safety requirements of the R-Car V3H. It provides supply voltages with the required current carrying capacity to meet all performance specifications, including sequencing, voltage accuracy and load jump behaviour. For functional safety, the system solution provides all the required power and digital monitoring functions.
Renesas’ new solution can reduce power dissipation by up to 33 percent compared to competitor PMICs under similar operating conditions. The lower power dissipation reduces cooling requirements and increases reliability. In addition, the two new power chips are designed to meet the requirements of R-Car SoCs without unnecessary extra effort, reducing component cost and PCB area. Renesas provides a reference hardware solution with the new components, which shortens development time and reduces testing efforts for customers.
The RAA271050 and RAA271000 PMICs are part of a complete ADAS front camera solution with LUPA-Electronics GmbH’s EagleCam camera module and Renesas’ R-Car V3H and R-Car V3M SoC devices. This combination is an open, turnkey front camera solution with flexible and powerful sensor technology. At the same time, it shortens time-to-market and lowers bill of materials (BOM) costs.
