PMICs for automotive camera modules comply with ISO 26262 standard

With the rapid development of ADAS, the number of onboard cameras required has increased significantly. At the same time, the introduction of functional safety concepts is becoming increasingly important, as even the failure of a single camera can increase the risk of an accident. It is therefore imperative for car and vehicle component manufacturers – including semiconductor suppliers – to comply with the international safety standard ISO 26262.

In 2018, Rohm received ISO 26262 certification for development and manufacturing processes from the German certification body TÜV Rheinland. In 2021, Rohm introduced the “ComfySIL” brand to identify products that support functional safety, contribute to user and system safety. As part of this series, the camera PMICs are “FS (Functional Safety) Process Compliant.” This product category corresponds to the highest level and signifies compliance with the ISO 26262 standard.

By meeting the functional safety requirements, the new products facilitate the safety requirements of the next ADAS generation. The required four voltage regulators (three switching regulators and one LDO) for the camera system are integrated into a package measuring just 3.5 mm × 3.5 mm, offering the industry’s smallest form factor in comparable camera PMICs, the manufacturer promises.

The ICs report anomalies such as voltage deviations or thermal overload via the I2C bus. Compared to previous solutions, an external LDO and other passive components can be eliminated; the PMIC package size has also been reduced. This results in a 25% smaller mounting area compared to previous solutions and enables smaller automotive camera systems. Further miniaturization is possible through optimization for individual customization. To meet the different requirements of CMOS image sensors from different manufacturers, output voltage and sequence control settings as well as anomaly behavior can be configured individually. This greatly simplifies development.

In addition to the four models (BD868A0MUF-C, BD868B0MUF-C, BD868C0MUF-C, BD868D0MUF-C) that meet both ISO 26262 and ASIL-B, the product line will include the non-ISO 26262-compliant BD868C1MUF-C model. This is suitable for users who do not require ASIL compliance. Rohm can also offer the products based on customer requirements such as output voltages, voltage tolerances, sequencing and functional safety requirements.

Samples of these components have been available since April 2022, with volume production starting in August 2022.
