Swedish e-car maker Polestar – a joint subsidiary of Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely – has signed up eight more partners for its Polestar 0 project. This aims to develop a truly climate-neutral car by 2030.

The list of new partners includes well-known automotive suppliers such as Vitesco or Autoneum as well as material and process specialists such as Schlötter, Stora Enso, TMG Automotive and others. The companies come from Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Finland and Sweden, among others, and cover technologies for traction inverters, electroplating, interior and exterior materials, renewable solutions for packaging, biomaterials and wood construction, coating and textiles, flat rolled aluminium and knitted and woven materials, and recycled aluminium.

New partners from Germany are Vitesco, a supplier of drive and power transmission technologies for the automotive industry, and Schlötter, a specialist in electroplating. Schlötter has more than 100 years of experience in the development of electrolytes for electroplating and the corresponding plant technology.

The Polestar 0 project was launched in 2021 out of the consideration that the automotive industry needs a complete reboot. While the shift to electric cars eliminates tailpipe emissions, Polestar sees the need to address emissions that come from production as well. The goal of the Polestar 0 project is to eliminate all sources of CO2e throughout the supply chain. From raw material extraction to material and vehicle production to delivery and end-of-life, the intention is not to rely on offset programmes – they are misleading, Polestar says.

Hans Pehrson, head of the Polestar 0 project: “My conviction of the success of this project is confirmed every time we meet with new partners. It is clear that there is immense potential to be tapped worldwide. Achieving the seemingly impossible is never a one-man show. Only by working together can we make the breakthroughs that really make a difference and find the transformative solutions that go beyond the automotive industry.”

Polestar believes that basic materials research is crucial, making biosourcing and mining, followed by refining and man-made materials, key to success. The project group is looking for more academic and corporate partners in the areas of raw materials, bio-based chemicals, polymers, electrical components, noble gases and other basic materials. In order to achieve the goal of bringing a climate-neutral vehicle to market by 2030, the components that are still missing must be developed and made available with the utmost urgency.
