Porsche reveals prototype battery-driven sports car
Porsche’s ‘Mission E’ protoype is a clear offspring of Porsche’s 911 but features an 800-volt electric powertrain that generates 600 horsepower. The vehicle is capable of accelerating to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.5 seconds.
At the launch in Germany Porsche, which is owned by Volkswagen AG, described Mission E as the first four-door battery-driven sports car that is fit for everyday use. The prototype can travel 500 kilometers on a full charge and can be recharged to 80% in about 15 minutes.
Porsche has yet to confirm whether it will decide to build the car but a final decision is expected to be made at the end of 2105. If the electric sports car gets the green light it could hit the streets in 2019.
Luxury car maker Audi, also part of the VW stable, is also unveiling at Frankfurt a concept for a battery-driven midsize sport-utility vehicle. The e-tron Quattro is planned for launch in 2018 as the Audi Q6, and will look to challenge Tesla’s Model X, which launches in the USA this autumn.
At Frankfurt, the Volkswagen group revealed the company plans to launch at least 20 battery-driven and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
