Power group adds 60A PoL DC-DC to second source module specifications
The alliance is a co-operative grouping of CUI, Ericsson Power Modules and Murata, who work together to offer de-facto “standard” formats of commonly required power conversion products, with the aim that a customer should always be able to find a true fit/form/function second-source unit for a range of units.

The standard sets out a mechanical and electrical specification; the AMP group, as part of its operation, promises tht at least two of the three companies will produce independently-manufactured product conforming to the specification. The manufacturing path is second-sourced; the range does involve exchange of design information between the participating companies, in order to ensure fully-compatible operation in all aspects of a power module offering advanced power conversion technology for distributed power systems.
The ‘gigaAMP’ standard, introduced to provide a higher current option in a land-grid array (LGA) footprint (shown above), builds on the previously-released ‘picoAMP’ standard, published in September 2015, which defined standards for a lower range of non-isolated platforms ranging from 6A to 18A. The 60A ‘gigaAMP’ standard defines a compact footprint of 25.1 x 14.1 mm in an LGA format. As with other specification offered by the group, the converters will have fully matching features sets, and compatible configuration files and formats. This will allow a second-source prouct to be ‘dropped in’ to a production run, including where configuration is by digital download at final test stage, without disruption.
The ‘gigaAMP’ standard also adds to the previously released ‘teraAMP’ standard for non-isolated digital point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters, released in February 2015, and the ‘microAMP’ and ‘megaAMP’ standards from November 2014. The first products to meet with this new ‘gigaAMP’ standard will be announced by AMP Group members later in 2016. (The illustration is of one of Ericsson’s modules, BMR463, conforming to “microAMP”).
“The ‘gigaAMP’ standard is a continuation of the AMP Group’s efforts to establish industry standards that cover every aspect of board-level digital power technology,” said Martin Hägerdal, President of Ericsson Power Modules. “And the addition of this new standard at 60A helps to further address the growing demands on performance, complexity and flexibility in intelligent power supply infrastructures,” said Steve Pimpis, President & CEO of Murata Power Solutions.
The consortium also offers some hints as to where it envisages offering future product in the series; one area is of direct 48V to 1V conversion, for which the group sees increasing demand and which is enabled by advanced semiconductor switches. It is also investigating the “1/16th brick” outline as a vehicle for a common product line; and is also looking at high power digital bus converters, and at front-end AC/DC power conversion units.
