„Powerbank“ complements stationary charging infrastructure
Since 2018, developers and planners at VW have been working on the concept of a flexible quick-charging pillar in the style of a power bank for mobile equipment, which can always be used when no stationary power is available. Technically, the charging station is based on the battery pack of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) of the Volkswagen Group. The MEB is a technology platform developed for electrically powered vehicles across all Volkswagen brands and contains an integrated, fast-charging, scalable battery set. The new charging system is designed for its cell modules. Later, the charging station will enable batteries from electric vehicles to live a second life.
If a vehicle battery has a defined reduced residual capacity after several years of service in the car, it is replaced. If this battery then passes a detailed analysis, it can be used for use in a flexible fast-charging column and so on.
The pilot project will start in summer 2019 together with the city of Wolfsburg. Production of the first fast-charging columns will start at the Hanover site in 2020. At the same time, cooperation talks are underway with potential partners. Forecasts show that the ramp-up of e-mobility in the coming years is likely to lead to a high demand for flexible fast-charging columns.
Production of the flexible fast-charging column is to take place at the Volkswagen plant in Hanover, where it will gradually replace the production of components for conventional combustion engines from 2020 onwards.
