Project to install graphene-based perovskite solar cell on Crete
The H2020-GRAPHENE project will investigate advanced technology for higher efficiencies, longer life and improved encapsulation of perovskite solar cells (PSC) using glass substrates and graphene electrodes as part of the European Union Horizon 2020 programme. The E500,000 grant was awarded to subsidiary Greatcell Solar Italy based in Rome for a 10m2 panel on Crete.
GSL, frormerly Dyesol, is developing materials and processes for third generation PSC technology from the laboratory to the factory to satisfy PV industry accreditation (IEC 61215). The aim is to use the perovskite organic thin film materials to produce PV technology that generates electricity for as low as 3.5 US cents per kWh or 20 – 25 US cents per watt-peak (Wp). This is significantly lower than existing silicon-based PV technologies.
The project is part of the Graphene flagship, one of the largest technological alliances in the EU, which includes the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission of France (CEA), University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Technical Educational Institute of Crete.
Greatcell Solar has recently received two similar grants, GOTSolar in 2016 (€650,000) and Apolo in late 2017 (€700,000) with two to three year project durations. The company is also a key partner in the Solliance flexible perovskite film development.
