Provizio 6K perception radar creates 1km safety cocoon
Provizio in Ireland has launched a software defined digital imaging perception radar that can provide data at up to 1km.
The VizioPrime 6K developed by Provizio was launched at CES 2024 and aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and enable the next generation of autonomous driving without the need for LiDaR laser sensors.
The radar uses proprietary active antenna technologies, modulation schemes and a sparse array design to distinguish between objects such as cars and pedestrians as well as detecting small objects such as tyres at ultra-long distances. Coupled with the VizioPlex surround sensors, this provides a safety cocoon with a range of up to 1km with sensors mounted in the bumper of a vehicle.
“This advancement is a step forward, not only for Provizio but the automotive industry as a whole,” said said Barry Lunn, CEO at Provizio which was set up in Shannon, Ireland in 2019 with experts from the automotive and aerospace industries.
“Historically some within the automotive industry have been pushing for autonomy, before the tech has been safe to do so – our work at Provizio is reversing this past trend, and setting things right with scalable and cost effective perception,” he said. “Our belief is that driver safety is paramount, and pioneering innovations centred around this principle will result in impactful transformations in road safety. This goes beyond roads – the technology has already been deployed to make agriculture, industrial machines and mining safer.”
