Qualcomm buys Foundries.io

Qualcomm has bought UK-based embedded software developer Foundries.io for an undisclosed sum.
Back at Embedded World 2022, Foundries.io talked about the potential for a billion dollar IPO. Now it has been sold to US chip giant Qualcomm without any significant announcement and will be part of Qualcomm Innovation Center as an independent subsidiary.
The Cambridge-based company had raised $11.5m for its secure Linux distribution and embedded software management framework to help developers manage the complexity of a software bill of materials and secure over the air (OTA) updates.
The deal was hidden in an announcement about the latest WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy chip at Embedded World 2023 without having to notify investors. Ian Drew stepped down as chairman after the acquisition.
The FoundriesFactory technology is seen by Qualcomm as a key part of its deal with Advantech announced today at Embedded World 2024 to provide and support AI models securely for edge boards and systems built by Advantech using its Snapdragon chipsets such as the RB3 Gen2.
