Qualcomm cleared to supply Huawei with 4G phone chips
The dispensation will allow Huawei to make a limited re-entry into the mobile phone market but continued to exclude the firm from the leading-edge 5G market. “We received a license for a number of products, which includes some 4G products,” Reuters quoted a Qualcomm spokesperson as saying. The spokesperson said Qualcomm has other license applications pending with the U.S. government.
Huawei has been the focus of a crippling embargo imposed by the United States denying it access to chips of its own design made for it by foundry TSMC (see US government reinforces Huawei chip embargo). The embargo has been causing Huawei smartphone and equipment businesses to stall for lack of chips.
The US administration had said that the embargo was necessary because Huawei had made use of US technology to undermine U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.
Since the tightening of restrictions several US companies and Samsung have been granted licenses to supply Huawei as exceptions to the general ban, but usually in a limited manner and somewhere behind the leading-edge.
