Qualcomm increases share of smartphone processor market
The smartphone application processor market grew 22 percent year-on-year growth to reach $5.2 billion in 2Q14, up from $4.7 billion in 1Q14.
Qualcomm remained market leader, as it has been for many quarters, and extends its margin by taking 58 percent of the market, up from 53 percent the previous quarter. Qualcomm was responsible for 56 percent of the market across the complete 2013 calendar year.
The top five ranking of vendors – Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek, Spreadtrum and Samsung saw the last two swap places. MediaTek closed on Apple with 13 and 14 percent revenue share, respectively. Sravan Kundojjala, senior analyst, said the multi price-tier Snapdragon processor portfolio continues to serve Qualcomm well in smartphone application processors.
Qualcomm is also profiting as the market moves towards application processors with integrated baseband processing for the communications modem.
"Strategy Analytics estimates that stand-alone AP [application processor] unit share dropped to 21 percent in 2Q14 compared to 28 percent in 2Q13 and this can be attributed to increased shipments of low-to-mid range smartphones, which often feature baseband-integrated Aps," said Stuart Robinson, director of Strategy Analytics handset components technologies service. "Stand-alone AP vendors HiSilicon and Samsung are also now shipping baseband-integrated APs in volume to address mid-range smartphones."
