QuickLogic turns to licensing FPGA fabric
The licensing is being done under the name ArcticPro eFPGA.
In choosing to add technology licensing to product sale to its business models QuickLogic is going down a similar path to Achronix Semiconductor Corp. (see Achronix branches out into FPGA IP with TSMC) and joining startup Flex Logix Technologies Inc. as an FPGA IP licensor (see FPGA cores offered for TSMC’s 40ULP process).
QuickLogic is starting this business initiative off with Globalfoundries but said it expects to announce additional foundry partners.
Embedding FPGA technology in SoCs will allow the high-cost of these custom devices to be mitigated by making single devices configurable for multiple functions and help them better address the fragmented market for Internet of Things devices, QuickLogic said.
To ease the design in of functions on the ArcticPro eFPGA technology QuickLogic will introduce the Borealis Design Tool Suite in 1Q17. These tools will enable SoC designers to evaluate and define eFPGA logic cell array sizes and generate design files necessary for SoC integration.
ArcticPro eFPGA IP is currently available for designs targeting GLOBALFOUNDRIES 65nm and 40nm processes and will be available with the new 22nm FDX process in 2017. Availability with other leading foundry partners will be announced in 2017.
