With the onset of spring, temperatures are rising again with summertime highs. But rising temperatures also mean that it quickly gets up to 70°C in parked vehicles: A danger for children or animals left in the car. Equipped with Infineon’s Xensiv 60 GHz radar sensor (BGT60ATR24C), in-cabin monitoring systems (ICMS) detect the smallest movements as well as vital signs of small children or animals left behind and sound the alarm. In addition, the compact and cost-effective chipset is suitable for applications such as radar front-ends for gesture recognition, high-resolution frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars for range finding, short-range sensing, and hidden sensor applications in the radome.

The BGT60ATR24C enables 4-GHz FMCW operation with extremely wide bandwidth in a small package. Sensor configuration and data acquisition are accomplished via a digital interface. The integrated state machine also enables independent data acquisition with power mode optimization for low power consumption. The size- and space-optimized solution has two transmit channels (TX) and four receive channels (RX) and offers excellent thermal management.

Furthermore, the radar sensor enables additional functions, such as a reminder to wear a seat belt. This results in a cost-effective solution that further improves the safety of vehicle occupants. The sensor is qualified for automotive applications according to AEC-Q100/101.
