Radiation-tolerant solutions based on COTS devices for NewSpace applications

By eeNews Europe

Most components dedicated to the space sector suffer from long lead times and high costs, but the AtmegaS64M1 removes these issues. The MCU is the second Microchip 8-bit megaAVR MCU to use the company’s COTS-to-radiation-tolerant technique after the AtmegaS128, which already boasts several design wins for critical space application. This approach takes a component that is already qualified to automotive standards and seals them in pin-out compatible plastic and ceramic packages to provide space-grade components.

Development of applications can begin with the COTS version of the device using the same toolchain, and the radiation-hardened ATmegaS64M1 can be dropped straight into the design. The ATmegaS64M1 can operate from -55° C to +125° C and is the first COTS-to-radiation-tolerant MCU to combine a CAN bus, DAC and motor-control functionality.
