Rambus is a prominent IP licensor and enjoyed a 30 percent growth year in 2016 lifting it to eighth place in a global ranking (see Imagination fades in 2016 semiconductor IP market). The company, founded in 1990, has had a chequered history of patent disputes with companies including a particularly long one with DRAM manufacturers over the use of its memory interface patents.

Rambus shares were up on the news that it might consider putting itself up for sale.
