Raspberry Pi-based industrial server and programmable controller
Sfera Labs’ already offers a range of industrial controllers and servers that have been based on open source platforms. Now, the company has integrated many of the features available separately in its existing offerings, into a single product.
The Iono Pi Max is based on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module single-board computer (SBC). The SBC is complemented by additional hardware to offer a full solution based on open source technology to provide the features of a proprietary industrial PLC at a lower cost.
By using the Raspberry Pi as the processing element, the Iono Pi Max can run any software or program that can run on a Raspberry Pi. An additional integrated MCU allows further application code to run alongside the Raspberry Pi to provide true real-time response and control. A wide selection of analog and digital interfaces allows the Iono Pi Max to connect to and control multiple external sensors and actuators.
The open platform also allows the implementation of any software that an application requires. It can run any operating system that is supported by the Raspberry Pi. The Iono Pi Max’s MCU is also in-field programmable, through the Raspberry Pi, with custom firmware.
The Iono Pi Max is available in a DIN-Rail mountable enclosure that has an option for use with a UPS for applications that need protection from the disruption caused by power outages.
The Iono Pi Max as a wide selection of inputs and outputs that includes relays; digital I/O (bidirectional TTL, digital inputs and open collector outputs); Wiegand, 1-Wire, Ethernet, CAN, RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces; high resolution voltage and current inputs and outputs; dedicated temperature sensors inputs. The device also features a hardware watchdog and real-time clock. Security is integrated and the Iono Pi Max also has dual SD cards that allow for redundancy and in-field software updates. An I2C bus is available for further system expansion.
The UPS capability and the inclusion of a 12V/24V rechargeable battery allows the Iono Pi Max to operate even in the event of a power outage. Connected sensors and other external devices can be powered by the Iono Pi Max.
The Iono Pi Max is compliant with the FCC and IC electromagnetic emissions limits for use in residential, industrial or commercial environments, and with the European Market electromagnetic emissions and immunity standards for residential, commercial and light-industrial environments.
“We believe that open source solutions are reshaping the IIoT marketplace,” commented Ulderico Arcidiaco, Co-founder and CEO, Sfera Labs. “The Iono Pi Max is unique in its offering, as no other solution combines as much functionality with as many features in a single package.”
