RS says; “The Raspberry Pi Camera Board Version 2 connects to any Raspberry Pi board or the Raspberry Pi Compute Module and enables users to create HD videos or take digital still photographs. The new camera board is easy to use and delivers functionality for a variety of camera applications for beginners, as well as offering further options for advanced users. These include time lapse and slow motion for a range of applications such as home security or botanical and wildlife watching.

The module integrates the high-quality and high-sensitivity eight-megapixel Sony IMX219PQ CMOS image sensor, which offers high-speed video imaging including support for 1080p, 720p60 and VGA90 video modes. The device integrates with the image sensor pipeline on Raspberry Pi, which provides advanced de-noising, distortion and lens-shading correction, automatic gain control (AGC) and white-balance (AWB).

The camera module connects to all Pi models via a 15 cm ribbon cable that attaches to the module slot and then plugs directly into the board’s CSI-2 port (Camera Serial Interface). Once connected, the camera board can be accessed via the Multi-Media Abstraction Layer (MMAL) or the Video for Linux (V4L) APIs, as well as by using libraries that are available online such as Python Picamera and many more.

Other specifications of the module include: a maximum supported resolution of 3280 x 2464 pixels; module dimensions of 23.86 x 25 x 9 mm; and an operating temperature range of –20°C up to +60°C. The new Raspberry Pi Camera Board V2 is now available in two versions – the Standard Visible and the infrared-sensitive Pi Noir

element14 is also introducing the camera modules, and at www.element14.com/raspberrypi remarks;

“Both these official Raspberry Pi cameras have been upgraded to 8MP and feature an image sensor that enables the board to capture 3280 x 2464 pixel static images. The v2 cameras have the same video capability as the original cameras supporting 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p90 video, and link to the Raspberry Pi board through a dedicated CSi interface. The NoIR camera v2 has a No InfraRed (NoIR) filter on the lens which makes it an option for infrared photography and taking pictures in lowlight environments.

The new v2 cameras are backwards compatible with all Raspberry Pi boards and have the same footprint and weight as the previous 5MP cameras. The Raspberry Pi Camera v2 and Raspberry Pi NoIR Camera v2 are available at the same $25 price.

The camera modules’ tiny size (25mm x 35mm x9mm) enables them to feature at the centre of some of the most eye-catching projects, including sending weather balloons into the stratosphere. The new cameras are ideal for applications including low-light photography (NoIR Camera), drones, CCTV, weather stations, school projects and more.

To highlight the capability of the new v2 cameras element14 is launching a social media ‘top 5 photos & videos’ competition, inviting people to submit their best photo or video for their chance to win. For more details search @element14 on Twitter.”
