Applications using real time clocks are, says the distributor, more reliable and can be more accurate compared to applications employing only an oscillator with a 32.768 kHz crystal. The real time clock retains time information even at lower supply voltages, thus saving power when the main system is shut down.

RX8130CE is designed to use any power source, including discharging battery, as primary supply. Any power supply can be used as backup power supply, including lithium-ion batteries, as user programmable charge control is implemented. Due to the built-in power switch function no external circuits are required for the switch from primary to backup power supply when the main supply is lost. The module has a size of 3.2 x 2.5 mm, a max. current consumption of 500 nA in backup-mode and a frequency tolerance of 5 ±23ppm at a temperature of 25°C. It has an I²C interface and functions including temperature compensated frequency output, alarm and timer function as well as a built-in RAM, in addition to the basic clock function.
