Reference designs speed development of USB PD and USB-C devices
The RTK-251-1PowerBank3 and RTK-251-BuckBoostConverter2 design kits are USB-IF PD3.0 certified. They are the first in a new series of reference designs for applications that implement the USB Type-C power and data connectivity standard.
The RTK-251-1PowerBank3 board is a power bank reference design for three series-connected lithium-ion batteries using the R9A02G011 USB-PD3.0 controller and the ISL95538B Buck-Boost NVDC (Narrow Voltage Direct Charging) battery charger. The reference design board is ideal for USB C chargers with multiple battery cells. It features a USB type C connector that supports Dual Role Power (DRP) function and can provide power source and power sink in both directions via the operating modes. When the Power Bank is in power sink mode, it requests 5V, 9V, 15V or 20V from a USB PD3.0 source such as an AC adapter. When the Power Bank operates in source mode, the lithium-ion battery provides 5V to 20V, which can be requested from a PC, tablet or smartphone. In addition, the RTK-251-1PowerBank3 changes its DRP function based on the remaining battery capacity displayed on the board’s LEDs.
The RTK-251-BuckBoostConverter2 is a DC/DC module that uses the R9A02G011 USB-PD3.0 controller and the ISL95338 bidirectional buck boost voltage regulator. The RTK-251-BuckBoostConverter2 reference design board is ideal for USB-C hubs as part of a USB-PD-AC adapter. It accepts 19 V with 4.73 A DC input voltage and generates a USB PD3.0 compatible VBUS output voltage. The reference design board supports PPS (Programmable Power Supply) and has two USB type C connectors for the VBUS current outputs.
