Chosen by Renault for both the task of developing the architecture of the cockpit and system integrator, Visteon designed the electronics and the user interaction scheme for a demo cockpit. Centred on connectivity functions, the design is optimised to extend the driver’s digital lifestyle to the vehicle. The multi-modal HMI concept embraces a large touchscreen and voice control for most functions. As long as the vehicle operates in "automatic driving" mode, the system even supports video telephony.

For the implementation of the concept, Visteon collaborated predominately with non-automotive partners and utilised innovative design methodologies that support very short design cycles. The long design cycles that are standard in the automotive industry are a constant source of tensions between car designers and the consumer electronics industry – by the time a carmaker has finalised an infotainment system, the consumer industry is already at least two product generations further down the road. To speed the design cycle, Visteon has created a proprietary software environment for the development of the HMI. The company claims that thanks to this environment it can adapt quickly to changing requirements throughout the design process.
