Renault, Valeo team up for the software-defined vehicle
The concept of the software-defined vehicle allows automakers to modify the functions and features of their cars even after delivery – and thus earn money over the entire life cycle of the vehicles. Because this requires technologies that do not normally fall within the sphere of competence of traditional automakers, Renault Group has now enlisted the help of supplier Valeo.
Under a development partnership now announced, Valeo will supply key electrical and electronic components for the software-defined vehicle, including the high-performance computer that runs the management of the installed software components. To this end, Valeo development teams will operate in close proximity to Renault Group sites in Guyancourt, Toulouse and Sophia-Antipolis; they will also work closely with Renault Software Factory teams. Valeo will also provide software for on-board applications, such as parking assistance.

The Valeo partnership completes Renault’s electronic ecosystem.
The partnership is expected to reduce development times and costs for the electrical and electronic architecture. Other priorities include high performance, compatibility and safety.
Renault has already reached agreements with Google to supply the Android operating system, connect to the cloud and provide a digital twin of the vehicle. Qualcomm is supplying the computer for the “Digital Chassis” along with the highly integrated System on Chip (SoC). The partnership agreement now signed with Valeo is designed to further strengthen Renault’s control over the value chain for the software-defined vehicle.
“With this cooperation, Renault Group and its future Ampere business unit for electric vehicles and software are thus further strengthening their position in the value chain of tomorrow,” explains François Provost, who is responsible for purchasing and partnerships on the Renault Board of Management.
