“Renesas has decided to have more focus on the stable microcontroller business,” said Shigeo Mizugaki senior VP and member of the board of Renesas. “For the multimedia SoC, the set top box, we have decided to quit this market and we are more focussed on industrial ASICs.”
The EMMA line for set top boxes and smart TVs is on its third major generation since its launch in 1998 and current designs will continue to be supported, said Rob Green, CEO of Renesas Europe. It was designed and supported in the UK by NEC before the merger with Hitachi.
“We will continue to produce the product for existing customer but we are not participating in any new designs,” he said. “It means we have stopped that activity and no longer have that capability. There was some headcount reduction and we moved resources into automotive chip design and AUTOSAR software resources, and also strengthened industrial.“
”Automotive is 60% of our business in Europe, there’s probably about 50 or Renesas parts in a Mercedes E class and its increasing in analog and power” said Green. “That is why we are focussing on automotive in Europe. For industrial Europe is also very important,” added Mizugaki.
