VinFast, Vietnam’s first global electric vehicle manufacturer, and chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corporation will expand their existing cooperation to include the development of automotive technology for electric vehicles and the supply of system components. Under the expanded agreement, Renesas will supply a broader range of products to VinFast, including SoCs, microcontrollers, analogue and power semiconductors. In addition, the Japanese electronics group will provide technical support to the Vietnamese automotive start-up in the development of future automotive applications and mobility services.

The access to Renesas’ automotive technologies and expertise will enable VinFast to accelerate new electric vehicle development and market expansion to aggressively increase its annual production and sales. Among other things, the company plans to expand into the European market, with considerations underway to build a manufacturing facility in Germany. The two companies will regularly exchange information on product development plans, market trends and requirements, progress in project implementation and new cooperation opportunities, Renesas revealed.

“VinFast is on track for global market expansion and mass production to ensure the highest vehicle performance and on-time delivery to customers,” VinFast CEO Le Thi Thu Thuy said. “By partnering with Renesas, VinFast gains access to advanced in-vehicle semiconductor technology and highly skilled system expertise with the goal of accelerating the development of safe and advanced electric vehicles for global markets.”

VinFast and Renesas have already collaborated on the development of infotainment systems for cars. SoCs (system-on-chips), R-Car and analogue products from Renesas have already been used in VinFast’s new VF8 and VF9 EV models. The cooperation was facilitated not least by the physical proximity of the two companies: Renesas has operated a design centre in Ho Chi Minh City since 2004; in April this year, Renesas opened another design centre in Da Nang.

VinFast was founded in 2017 and owns a state-of-the-art automotive production complex with an automation level of up to 90 % in Hai Phong, Vietnam.
