Renesas expands R-Car SoC line to boost performance, integration
Renesas is expanding its range of R-Car SoCs (system-on-chips) for in-vehicle applications with a new series, R-Car Gen3e. With six new members, the new R-Car Gen3e SoC series offers a scalable product line for entry- to mid-range applications that require high-quality graphics rendering. These include integrated cockpit domain controllers, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), digital instrument clusters, driver monitoring systems and LED matrix lighting.
The devices extend the R-Car Gen3 SoCs with increased CPU performance of up to 50 k DMIPS and a speed of 2 GHz. This enables OEMs and tier ones to meet the ever-increasing demands for user-friendliness and functional safety.
To shorten development time and reduce the BOMs, the manufacturer provides so-called “winning combination solutions” with the R-Car Gen3e SoCs. Customers can combine the R-Car Gen3e SoCs with Renesas’ high-precision timing ICs and power management products.
“With growing popularity of applications such as augmented reality navigation and AI-based digital assistants in cars, OEMs and Tier1s must balance the rapidly increasing demand for larger, higher-resolution displays and high-performance chips with rising BOM costs and longer development times,” said Naoki Yoshida, vice president automotive digital products marketing at Renesas. “The new R-Car Gen3e SoCs and reference solutions provide a seamless and cost-effective migration path that offers compatibility and easy integration with Renesas’ current R-Car Gen3 SoCs. This enables users to bring their automotive applications to market faster and easier.”
Key features of the R-Car Gen3e SoCs: R-Car D3e, R-Car E3e, R-Car M3Ne, R-Car M3e, R-Car H3Ne and R-Car H3e include
- Increased CPU performance – up to 2 GHz for the R-Car M3Ne, R-Car M3e and R-Car H3e devices
- Arm Cortex R7 on-chip real-time CPU that, when combined with a Renesas PMIC, eliminates the need for an external automotive controller, reducing overall BOM costs
- Shorter development times with reference solutions for fast start, HMI and functional safety
- Updated board support packages with the latest versions of Linux and Android operating systems
Renesas is also announcing the following items as reference solutions for R-Car Gen3e:
- Pre-integrated software enables higher application integration, for example for 2D/3D cluster HMI, welcome animation, rear-view camera and surround-view applications.
- VirtIO technology allows developers to easily add the reference solutions to existing applications without changing the existing Linux or Android application.
- Support of ASIL-B functional safety requirements for applications such as camera freeze detection, as well as for true hardware separation in cockpits without a hypervisor.
- The R-Car Consortium (RCC) partner ecosystem includes system integrators, middleware/application developers, and operating system and tool providers. It offers innovative solutions for the Connected Car, ADAS and Gateways market segments. This enables customers to reduce development time and accelerate time-to-market for new products.
The R-Car Gen3e SoCs are available now in sample quantities.
