The VP9 codec standard is an open and royalty free video coding format developed by Google that offers higher levels of video compression than previous video codecs and particularly for high-resolution video. It is therefore favored for internet streaming of 4K/UHD video content.

Argon Streams VP9 is a set of bit streams engineered to provide coverage and verification of VP9 video decoders. The bit-streams are derived from Google’s VP9 reference code using the same compiler technology that was developed for Argon’s HEVC bit-streams. The process uses directed random numbers to ensure that the bit-streams provide comprehensive testing of all functions, value ranges and cross coverage combinations in the VP9 specification. It includes support for VP9 profiles 0, 1, 2 and 3.

In March 2015 Argon announced it had licensed Argon Streams VP9 to video codec IP provider Chips & Media Ltd. (Seoul, Korea) which licenses out its own hardware IP such as the Wave412 core that combines HEVC/H.265 Main 10 profile decoder with VP9 Profile 2 decoder for UHD(4K).
