Renesas Electronics has licensed embedded FPGA (eFPGA) IP and EDA tools from Menta in France for its ForgeFPGA line of programmable devices.

The ForgeFPGA line was acquired with Dialog Semiconductor and was developed by the team that developed the GreenPak configurable technology at Silego Technology.

Menta’s Origami Programmer RTL to bitstream generation system synthesis tool enables secure, in-field updates to the eFPGA core, allowing ASIC design to be easily updated with new functionality, even after deployment.

The Menta soft eFPGA technology comes as RTL and uses standard cells and so can be used on any standard process technologies, rather than requiring a custom process. The eFPGA IP, from 100 to 10,000 look up tables, can also incorporate hard macros such as third party block RAM, or Menta patented digital signal processors. The eFPGA IP has also been successfully radiation hardened and is silicon-proven on multiple foundry processes.

The deal includes the Origami Programmer tool  which delivers synthesis and place & route tools that will be seamlessly integrated into Renesas’ existing GoConfigure software hub. This integration ensures a smooth and intuitive user experience across all GoConfigure supported platforms.

“We are proud to support Renesas in accelerating the ForgeFPGA roadmap with our fifth-generation eFPGA IP,” said Vincent Markus, CEO of Menta. “This collaboration reflects our shared vision to democratize programmable logic by enabling rapid integration, foundry independence, and optimal cost efficiency. With our standard cell-based architecture and our Origami Programmer software, Renesas gains the agility to address fast-moving markets with tailored, scalable solutions—without compromise. We look forward to driving long-term value together through innovation and execution.”

Menta recently also launched a low cost IP access programme for new customers to fabricate test silicon incorporating the eFPGA technology. Called LaunchPad, this is aimed at aerospace and defence applications at  up to 90% off Menta’s standard licensing fees. Customers can then “upgrade” their test silicon licenses to full production licenses, with the initial fee applied towards the production license cost.

“eFPGAs are becoming more popular in Defense and Aerospace semiconductors” said Vincent Markus, CEO of Menta. “Reprogrammable logic expands mission capabilities post-fabrication, allow for easier and less expensive modernization, and serve a broad range of applications within the Defense & Aerospace spectrum. The Launch Pad program significantly lowers the barrier to entry for silicon makers wanting to evaluate an eFPGA array in their next design.”
