Renesas seeks purchasers for fabs
The company issued a statement saying it intends to close its Yamaguchi factory in Ube and consolidate within the rest of the company the silicon manufacturing at its Shiga factory in Otsu over the next two-to-three years.
A compound semiconductor manufacturing line at Otsu in Shiga prefecture will continue to operate.
The products currently manufactured on the production lines affected by this decision are scheduled to either be discontinued or to have production transferred to other facilities operated by the Renesas Group.
Although there have been successful sales of wafer fabs by Japanese IDMs to foundries in the past (see Tower buys three wafer fabs for $8 million) the fact that these are six-inch wafer fabs and that there is unlikely to be contract manufacturing to carry over, may hurt prospects.
Renesas said it would try to ensure continued employment for the workers affected by the closures and would “endeavour to secure purchasers” for the Yamaguchi factory and portions of the Shiga factory following their closure and consolidation.
