Renesas turns to Swiss startup for ultrawideband
3dB Access was founded in 2013 and is fabless vendor of UWB chips. Renesas said it will license technology and collaborate with 3dB Access to bring secure access solutions to the connected smart home, Internet of Things (IoT), Industry 4.0, mobile computing, and connected vehicle applications.
Renesas added that is discussing a business engagement that will enable 3db Access to develop UWB solutions for different market sectors, in addition to bringing existing UWB solutions to the Renesas product portfolio.
Renesas is on a mission to gain wireless capabilities to allow its MCUs to penetrate better into industrial and consumer IoT and it clearly likes Europe as a source for wireless support. The announcement of the licensing deal with 3dB Access comes only on a few days after a deal on near field communications (NFC) was struck with Panthronics AG (see Renesas recruits Austria’s Panthronics to help with wireless).
Renesas is augmenting its microcontrollers (MCUs) and RF connectivity capabilities with 3db Access’ field-proven secure ranging UWB chips, which are designed for use in smartphones, smart watches, automobiles, and other IoT applications.
The Swiss startup’s UWB solutions are IEEE 802.15.4z dual HRP/LRP compliant and utilize an RF architecture that achieves lower power consumption through the support of LRP-mode.
“We are proud that this collaboration recognizes the 3db advances in UWB technology and will bring precise and secure location capabilities to the large ecosystem of battery-powered wireless devices,” said Boris Danev, CEO of 3db Access, in a statement issued by Renesas.
