CMOSIS (Antwerp, Belgium), a developer of advanced CMOS image sensors for applications in machine vision, digital cinema, aerospace, scientific and medical applications, is considering an initial public offering (IPO) of shares according to local newspaper De Tijd.
CMOSIS was founded in November 2007 as a fabless CMOS image sensor vendor and has developed IP related to high-end CMOS image sensors such as global shutter pixels, fast and low-noise AD converters, backside illumination and increased dynamic range. The company has grown continuously and consistently and now employs about 70 workers.
In December 2013 it was announced that private equity firm TA Associates Management LP (Boston, Mass.) would acquire the company. The terms of the deal were not disclosed but according to the De Tijd article TA Associates holds 80 percent of the company and the six founders and other staff at CMOSIS retained 20 percent.
The same article said CMOSIS is expecting 2014 sales of €50 million (about $58 million) and an operating margin of 30 percent.
At the beginning of 2014 On Semi sued CMOSIS in Texas alleging infringement of four image sensor patents that On Semi gained title to when it acquired Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (Belgium) BVBA in February 2011.
In August 2014 CMOSIS acquired all outstanding shares of the Swiss Awaiba Group, a developer of line-scan CMOS imagers for industrial web inspection, sub-mm CMOS camera modules for endoscopy, and on-board automotive cameras.
"The acquisition became possible after TA Associates stepped in as a strong financial partner of CMOSIS earlier this year. This enabled horizontal expansion and growth acceleration," said Luc De Mey, chairman and CEO of CMOSIS, at the time.
