Report: Samsung gets license to supply Huawei with displays

Reuters referenced an unnamed source “familiar with the matter.”

Huawei and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. are two high-profile Chinese electronics companies that have been put on the so-called ‘entity list’ by the US government. That listing requires suppliers seek a special license to supply any product or service that contains or was made using US technology.

The pressure exerted over several months has culminated with the suspension of many semiconductor supplies to Huawei on September 15. The embargo has been causing Huawei smartphone and equipment businesses to stall for lack of chips (see US embargo causes Huawei to run out of Kirin processors).

Samsung supplies organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays for both its own smartphones and for those from Apple. However, it is not clear whether granting Samsung alone is enough to unlock supply for Huawei as other companies in the supply chain may also need to be licensed.

The US has reportedly granted Intel a license to supply Huawei (see Intel granted licence to supply Huawei). But again it is not clear that Huawei needs components that Intel can supply.
