According to reports, not all planned software functions will be available at the market launch. Also the planned software update capability over the air (OTA) is not supposed to work for the time being, at least for the first update the car has to be brought to the garage.

Even one of the computers in the car (“Icas3”) does not reach its target values, according to internal documents that were sent to the weekly magazine “Der Spiegel”.

This unspecific classification is followed by a concrete case of a function that does not (yet) work. For example, the car should not yet be able to transfer a route plan, including planned charging stops, from the user’s smartphone to the vehicle and dynamically adjust it while driving.

The head-up display also repeatedly overtaxes the car’s processors. The plan is that this head-up display will show the speedometer information and navigation instructions, as well as the distance to the car in front and certain traffic situations. What exactly works and what doesn’t work is not clear from the reports, and VW is not contributing to the clarification: The company’s press office is adamantly silent.

According to Spiegel, the most serious errors are to be corrected by the end of June 2020. In August, prospective buyers will be able to view the car in showrooms and configure models.

However, not all of the originally planned digital functions will be available on the planned launch date. According to current planning, the ID.3 is to be launched on the market initially with a reduced digital offering. First-time buyers should be able to download missing functions later via software update.
