Research project brings OLEDs closer to industrialization
Fifteen companies and research institutes from six European countries collaborated in the project since 2008. As a tangible result, the consortium has developed a large-area OLED luminaire consisting of nine active tiles with an area of 33- x 33-cm2 each.
The total efficacy of the luminaire which emits warm-white light is 27lm/W; the operating lifetime is 10.000 hours. At the end of this time span, the luminaire still emits 50 percent of its original light quantity, explained project coordinator Stefan Grabowski.
The near-industrial manufacturing process for the OLEDs has been developed and implemented at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (Fraunhofer IPMS) in Dresden. According to Grabowski, the process development emphasized cost-effectiveness and industrialization scenarios for the volume production of OLEDs.
An article in the upcoming print edition of eeNews Europe will describe in detail the results of the research process and the resulting perspectives for the industry.
