Retrofittable LED lamp extends service life of halogen headlamps
After the H7 model introduced two years ago, the Night Breaker H4 is the second product from ams Osram for retrofitting existing vehicles with LED lamps. The H4 LED can be used in a number of car brands, including models from Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen. The H4 contains combined light sources for low and high beam and already has approval for road use in Germany and Austria; further validation tests are underway to approve the Night Breaker H4 LED for use in other makes and models as well as in other countries.
The tests conducted by TÜV Süd showed that the Night Breaker H4 LED produces 230% more light than the minimum requirements of the ECE standard R112 for halogen headlamps, with 50% less glare.
In addition, the Night Breaker H4 LED has up to five times longer life than a standard halogen lamp. This reduces the frequency of workshop visits for lamp replacement and saves the cost of replacing defective lamps. At 6000 K, the new H4 LED lamp produces a bright, cool white light that resembles natural daylight – in contrast to the yellowish light of the original halogen two-filament lamps.
“The Night Breaker lamps are designed to be easily installed in approved vehicle models,” comments Hans Schwabe, General Manager BU Automotive at ams Osram. “With this simple upgrade, motorists can enjoy increased safety, better visibility and a more stylish effect at night. At the same time, it avoids the hassle of driving to the workshop to have a faulty halogen lamp replaced.”
