Retrofittable sensor detects serial numbers on banknotes
The prerequisite for this is that it must be possible to mechanically integrate the sensor technology into the banknote processing machine’s existing transport path and to connect it electrically. The reader comprises two contact image sensor modules and one signal processing unit measuring 100x65x12mm. It captures images of the banknotes’ serial numbers and employs optical character recognition to evaluate those images on an external PC and then saves the results for future research and tracing. The serial number reader unit opens up new possibilities for combating counterfeiting and enables central banks to trace banknotes nationwide throughout their entire lifecycle.
The 236x16x12mm sensor module reads six to ten banknotes per second at a transport speed of 0.7 to 2.0 m/s. A USB 2.0 port is used for data transmission. Further features include the downloading of firmware and in addition to the optional capabilities for tracing banknotes in accordance with ECB Article 6. The serial number reader solution runs on 8 to 24V in a temperature range of +5°C to +45°C with a maximum air humidity (non-condensing) of 85%.
